Gitano Mairena

La piel del tambor

Gitano Mairena appears as an implacable creditor in the episode of Celestino Peregil’s attempted escape from his debts. With Pollo Muelas, he waits on the waterfront and turns Peregil’s calculation of the deadline into a chase: the debt is due not at the end of Wednesday, as Peregil hopes, but when Thursday begins at midnight.

Identity and Introduction

Mairena is introduced as a tall, thin, sinister figure, contrasted with the smaller, elegant, precisely moving Pollo Muelas. The pair rise from a stone bench as Peregil passes near the docks. Their stillness and sudden appearance interrupt his optimistic walk and transform the empty waterside into a place of confrontation.

The Deadline

Peregil says that it is Wednesday and that he has one day left. Mairena corrects him: Thursday begins at twelve o’clock that night, leaving Peregil only an hour and five minutes. To make the deadline tangible, he strikes a match; its brief flare reveals his hand, the missing little finger, and the face of his watch. The gesture makes the threat feel less like an abstract debt than a reckoning measured by the clock.

Peregil swears that he will pay. Mairena and Muelas close in, their cigarette tips glowing in the dark. The encounter begins as intimidation, but Peregil runs, and the two creditors pursue him toward the stairs. He collapses before reaching safety, exhausted and gasping, with the banknotes he has hidden under his shirt stuck to his body with sweat.

Partnership with Pollo Muelas

Mairena acts alongside Muelas rather than alone. The two share the pursuit and arrive at the foot of the stairs winded, like Peregil. Mairena’s broken-voiced insult acknowledges how fast their quarry has run; Muelas then pats Peregil’s face and praises his effort with an almost tender manner. Their mix of menace, exertion, and mock warmth gives the pursuit a grimly comic edge, without undoing the threat behind the deadline.

Narrative Role

The scene presents Mairena through Peregil’s panic: the creditor’s watch and missing finger emerge in a flash of light, while the approaching figures are reduced to silhouettes and cigarette embers. The precise midnight cutoff turns a financial obligation into immediate physical pressure. Mairena’s role is brief but decisive: he and Muelas make Peregil’s attempt to carry off the money into a failed flight, ending with debtor and pursuers alike sprawled at the bottom of the stairs.
